What to Wear to a Wedding

Attending a wedding is a joyous occasion, but guest attire can be confusing. This guide outlines the essential apparel mistakes to avoid for both men and women, ensuring you look appropriate and stylish.

What to Wear to a Wedding

Weddings are a wonderful occasion to dress festively and step outside of your everyday style. However, navigating guest attire can be challenging. Understanding what is appropriate—and what is not—is essential for every wedding guest.

Common Wedding Attire Mistakes to Avoid

For the Ladies

When preparing a wedding outfit, the goal is to look your best. This often leads to experiments with fabrics, lengths, and patterns that may not be appropriate for the event. Although weddings are a social event with opportunities to meet new people, it is important to adhere to a certain dress code out of respect for the couple.

AVOID:

Overly Tight Clothing

While form-fitting clothing can flatter your figure, outfits that are excessively tight or revealing are best avoided at a wedding. Opt for a more conservative silhouette that ensures you look sophisticated and feel comfortable, especially when meeting the newlyweds' parents.

Black or White

It is a well-known rule that guests should not wear white, as this color is traditionally reserved for the bride. If you choose to wear black, be sure to incorporate a large, colorful accessory to refresh your outfit and give it a festive feel.

Animal Prints

While every woman should own an animal print piece, it is generally best to avoid wearing it to a wedding. Such bold patterns can appear to be in poor taste and are often unsuitable for most types of wedding celebrations.

Deep Necklines and Very Short Skirts

Even at a casual beach wedding, the line between a playfully sexy outfit and one that appears tacky is very thin. If you wish to show more skin, a good rule of thumb is to choose to accentuate either your neckline or your legs, but never both at the same time.

Transparent Fabrics

Excessively transparent clothing is also not the best option for a wedding. If you still want to show a hint of skin, lace is a wonderful alternative, whether used as a small detail or for a full lace dress.

Excessive Sequins

Being dressed in sequins from head to toe is more reminiscent of a New Year's Eve party than a wedding. If you love sparkles, incorporate them into a specific part of your look, such as your accessories, rather than the entire dress.

For the Gentlemen

While women may prepare their outfits months in advance, men often leave it to the last minute, assuming their attire is not particularly important. This is a misconception. The very fact that you were invited means you are important to the couple, and they will certainly appreciate you reciprocating that respect with proper clothing.

AVOID:

Inappropriate Shoes

Inappropriate shoes include anything too open (like flip-flops) or the athletic shoes you wear to the gym. For a casual beach wedding, textile or suede loafers are a great alternative. For a more traditional wedding, it is best to rely on classic dress shoes in brown, beige, or blue.

Jeans

I understand that for many gentlemen, comfort is paramount. This often leads to the temptation of choosing jeans, hoping no one will notice. However, jeans are simply too casual and show a lack of respect for the event, regardless of the location. Instead, for a casual wedding, opt for chino or linen trousers.

T-shirts

This garment is also not recommended for a wedding, as it lacks the necessary festive feel. A shirt in a fresh, bright color or with an artistic pattern is always a better idea. For a more elegant dress code, adding a jacket, a blazer, or even just a waistcoat is a wonderful touch. A polo shirt can be an acceptable alternative only if the dress code is explicitly casual.

Shorts

In extremely rare cases, shorts are a suitable option for a wedding. This is usually reserved for small, friendly gatherings in midsummer, perhaps on a beach or in a garden. In almost all other cases, it is appropriate to choose long trousers.
